Why we're writing this

zemra is an app for meeting people around something worth going to. The going-to part deserves words of its own — so here they are.

We spend a lot of our week looking at what's playing in Greece. Cinemas in Athens and Serres, theatres running a show for three nights only, a festival lineup that lands without much noise around it. Most of it never gets written about anywhere. It just plays, and then it's gone.

A listing tells you where and when. It doesn't tell you whether it's worth your Friday. That gap is what this page is for.

What goes here

  • Our take on specific programmes. A film we saw and can't stop arguing about, a play we think deserves a fuller room. These link straight to the programme page so you can see where it's showing.
  • Notes on the app. What we're building, what we got wrong, what changed and why.
  • Everything around going out in Greece. The neighbourhood cinemas worth the detour, how a summer screening actually works, where to eat after a late show.

What doesn't

No paid placement, no rankings we can't defend, no reviews of things we haven't seen. If we're writing about something because we love it, we'll say so. If a venue or a distributor gave us tickets, we'll say that too.

The best part of a first date isn't the date. It's the something you both went to do.

That's the whole idea behind the app, and it's the same idea behind writing this. The more specific we can be about what's worth seeing, the easier it is for two people to have a reason to be in the same room.

If there's something playing near you that you think we should be writing about, tell us: hello@zemraapp.com. Otherwise, go see what's on — here's tonight.
